Gold and platinum made simple

When you have chosen your Bakker diamond and designed your ring with Peter, you might be wondering about the type of metal your jewellery should be made in.  White gold, yellow gold and platinum are the most popular.  However, many people are unsure of the difference between white gold and platinum due to the fact they look almost identical in a newly made piece of jewellery.  Here are some  facts to help you decide.

Put simply, platinum is considerably more expensive than gold because it is one of the rarest and most sought after precious metals.  Most people do not realise how rare platinum is.  It takes 10 tons of ore and a five-month process to make 1 ounce of platinum.   It is very strong and will secure diamonds and other precious gems in their settings.  As with any and all precious metals including gold and silver, platinum can be scratched.  However, platinum doesn’t scratch the same as gold and you can take a platinum piece of scratched jewellery and all the jeweller has to do is polish it and it will be as good as new.

Platinum jewellery is one of the purest metals and most jewellery contains 90% to 95% of pure platinum. On the other hand, 18 karat gold is only 75% pure and 14 karat gold is 58% pure gold.

Another advantage to platinum is that it will never tarnish or lose its rich white luster.  Any type of jewellery set in platinum will be a rare classic and timeless piece.

If you prefer to have your Bakker Diamonds jewellery manufactured in white gold, the natural color of which is actually a light grey color, it can be rodium plated simply and easily to give the white gold a beautiful white lusture similar to platinum.  By coating  the white gold with Rhodium (another white metal similar to platinum but less expensive)  we can make your jewellery beautifully white  however  it does wear away eventually. To keep a white gold ring looking its best it should be re-rhodium plated approximately every 12 to 18 months.  This process is simple and inexpensive.
