Yes. Day to day, Peter is normally sourcing stones, attending pre-arranged meetings, talking to clients, designing, or physically at the bench making jewellery.

A typical day at Bakker Diamonds is a very busy one. If you arrive unannounced, you may find he is busy and unable to see you at that time.

Clients’ individual budgets vary greatly, but we believe diamond rings of quality and substance are achieved at a starting price of around $6,000 to $10,000.

Once you spend this amount or more, you will certainly be thrilled with the result. The amount you spend will determine a bigger or better-quality diamond, allow for a more elaborate setting, or perhaps include multiple diamonds.

If, for example, you are contemplating an engagement ring, you should consider several factors, including the style you or your fiancé prefer.

Some clients have $5,000 to spend on diamond studs, while others may want a very large diamond or perhaps a rare pink diamond and are prepared to spend in excess of $500,000. Every job is different.

We source our diamonds and other gems from both overseas cutting factories, including Antwerp, Tel Aviv and New York, and Australian facilities, depending on your requirements.

As a member of the Jewellers Association of Australia, we warrant that the diamonds we sell are conflict-free.

We work predominantly with diamonds, but we also create items using sapphires and rubies. Both sapphires and rubies are forms of corundum, or aluminium oxide.

We prefer these three gem types because they are at the top of the Mohs hardness scale, with diamond being almost four times harder than corundum. This allows us to deliver durability and longevity in every piece.

We make jewellery in platinum and 18-carat white, rose and yellow gold. We also work with 14-carat and, occasionally, 9-carat white, yellow or rose gold.

These days, it is unusual for a reasonably sized diamond not to be certified.

An insurance valuation and an independent laboratory diamond certificate stating all the details of your special piece will be supplied. These documents provide the retail replacement value and specifications of your purchase.

Excluding normal wear and tear, and subject to annual inspections, our workmanship is guaranteed for life.

The physical labour involved in making a piece of jewellery can range from one to more than 40 hours. Most modern ring styles require an average of 8 to 12 hours of work.

Once a deposit has been paid, the customer can usually be wearing the item within 10 to 15 working days. The exact timeframe depends on the design, how quickly it is required and the jobs already in production.

Urgent deadlines are not a problem. We are always juggling our schedule to accommodate important dates.

Not all rough diamond crystals are of the same quality, but these variations are not fully described on laboratory certificates. Ultimately, it comes down to how the stone interacts with light.

If all the criteria listed on two stones appear exactly the same, but one is substantially more expensive, there will usually be a reason. Generally, the more expensive stone will simply look better.
